Teen työtä, siis olen?

Bloggaus suomeksi alla:

Muistan sen kuin eilisen päivän. Auditorion ovella seisoi mies joka näytti kättelevän kaikki sisään astuvat ihmiset. Asetuin jonoon ja pian vuoroni koitti. Jännitti. Tilanne oli sähköistynyt. Kättely oli lämmin, kannustava. Katsoimme toisiamme silmiin.

Taisinpa uskaltautua halaamaankin. Siis naisia, en nyt miehiä sentään. Jotenkin kummallisesti tunnelma vapautui. Olin aika innostunut. Luennolla Saarinen puhui 007-filosofiasta ja inhimillisestä lämmöstä. Silti suurimman vaikutuksen minuun teki juuri kättely.

Kohta viiden vuoden ajan jokainen työpäiväni on startannut kosketuksella. Nykyään kun kerron tavastamme muille, saan usein kuulla hämmästyneen kysymyksen: Siis halaatteko te toisianne ihan joka aamu?

Kulttuuri on valintoja.

Ja kyllä me halaamme. Uskomme kosketuksen maagiseen voimaan.

Työ on suurimmalle osalle ihmisistä pakollinen paha.

Meillä on mahtava mahdollisuus muuttua. Piskuisen Suomen on kyettävä hyödyntämään koko potentiaalinsa pärjätäkseen globaalissa kilpailussa.

Muutos on tekoja

Koulutuksen tavoitteena on kuitenkin lähes aina osaamisen kasvattaminen.

Urheilussa on todistettu monen monta kertaa kuinka altavastaajaksi ennustettu joukkue raivaa tiensä voittajaksi.

Urheilussa maalin juhliminen halaamalla on normaalia.

Muutokset tapahtuvat teko kerrallaan. On kyse valinnoista arjen keskellä. Tervehdinkö iloisesti vai pelkästään rutiinilla? Olenko läsnä hetkessä vai annanko vallan kiireen tunnulle? Kysynkö työkaverilta mitä kuuluu vai ajattelenko ettei se minulle kuulu? Huomaanko toiset jotta hekin voivat huomata minut?

Siitä olen varma, että halaaminen on yski parhaista keinoista kertoa toiselle: Olen huomannut sinut.

Here’s the blog text in English:

I remember that moment like yesterday. A man was standing at the door of auditorium and it looked as if he would shake hands with everyone who walks in. I stepped into the queue and soon it was my turn. I was a little nervous. The moment was exciting, but the handshake was warm and encouraging. We looked each other into the eyes. Although we were over 200 people in there, I felt like he had noticed me especially.

A man at the door was a philosopher Esa Saarinen in his famous leopard jacket. A few minutes after the beginning of the session he asked us to greet the people around us in a gently dynamic way. There I found myself giving high-fives to strangers, and even got encouraged to hug to some of them. Just the women, you know, not yet the men. Somehow naturally the atmosphere got very relaxed. I was quite excited. At his speech Saarinen talked about 007-philosophy and about the human warmth. The biggest thing for me, nevertheless, was the handshake. Is he really doing that in the beginning of every speech?, I wondered.

At the seminars of Esa Saarinen people shine and get the best out of themselves. How might we take that athmosphere into the workkplaces as well?

Later while I was a learner at Tiimiakatemia in Jyväskylä, Finland, me and my teammates developed a habit of greeting each other every morning by hugs, handshakes or maybe by high fives. I don’t know where that habit came from. Maybe the speech of Esa Saarinen had an effect on it. We kept hugging and shaking hans with all our teammates every morning during the whole time of learning at Team Academy.

Culture is choises.

When I moved into the working life, this great habit died. Every now and then we passed the high fives for everyone, but otherwise greeting was mainly verbal. Then I joined Monkey Business, a company formed by my mates from Tiimiakatemia, and this habit of greeting gently came back into my life. For about 5 years my work days have started by a touch with the other, which is not a common thing in the Finnish working culture. Nowadays when I tell about this habit of ours for others, I often receive a confused question: ”Really you hug each other every morning?” And yes we hug. We believe in the magic of touch. When someone touches me I feel I’m alive, I’m real. The usual good morning -greeting is good, but the hug beats that 6-0 for sure.

My work as a coach and as a consultant has opened my eyes for the shortcomings of the Finnish working culture. For most of the people, work is an obligatory encounter with an evil. Work is considered as a heavy carriage. Not for all, of course. Some like and enjoy their work, and thus gain with it much more value than just salary. Majority of the Finnish working environments is still feeling down. People are tired and powerless. Common, and I think confusing, belief is, that work is supposed to be dreary. If someone enjoys working, and even hugs the workmates, there’s something strange going on with that person.

Luckily the Finnish  working culture and the whole world economy are now experiencing turbulence. We have a great chance to change. The tiny Finland needs to be able to use it’s whole potential to be able to stand up and play in the global competition. We need to be smarter, more creative and more productive than the others. So no more work, but smarter work.

Change is action

They say that a leader effects the working community already by his presence. If a leader greets happily, looks directly into your eyes and is present, this habit will spread little by little to the whole community of work. If a leader shows up always busy, tense, and behind the closed doors, also that becomes an accepted way of working in the whole community.

Organizations train their employees very much nowadays. Usually the trainings are targeted for developing new skills. New information is springing out from every channel, although the previous ”update” might be still in process and not functioning in practice. Lots of trainings end up being useless, because without the good working community and team work the knowledge of the community will never reach it’s full potential. In sports it’s seen many times that the underdogs team wins. The comments of the sportsmen tell us something important. ”These guys care for each other also outside of the playground, and I see, that it’s vitally important thing for the success. With that care you throw yourself in and the commitment at a whole new level.”, said by Jyrki Aho, a coach of a Finnish ice-hockey team JYP, that won the Finnish championship last year against all the bets.

Teams that care for each member at work and outside of works can succeeed spectacularly due to the increased comitment of each member.

I believe that exactly this point: caring for each other, is the leverage that helps Finland to grow. When you feel like being an important part of the whole, you put in your everything for the team and for the cause that matters. Facing the problems in general becomes easier. Illness, physical shortcomings and personal life problems are faced honestly and together. In sports it’s normal to celebrate the goals by hugging each team player around. Why couldn’t this happen in working life?

If you really want things to change, you need to start from yourself. You better focus on the things you can effect, and practically the only thing you can effect is yourself. Changes happen action by action. It’s about choices in the middle of the routines. Shall I greet the other happily or just with a routine. Am I present in this moment or will I let the feeling of busyness take over? Am I asking my workmate how is he doing, to really get to know how is he doing, or am I thinking that it’s not my business. Am I noticing the others so that they can notice me too?

One thing I’m sure about, that hugging is one of the best ways to tell the other: I have noticed you.

Heu Atro! Joo! Esa on suuri innoittaja meille. Innostuimme hänen filosofiastaan jo ennen Monkey Busineksen syntymää, ja yrityksen myötä kaikki ajatusyö käy koko ajan käytännöllisemmäksi ja käytännöllisemmäksi.

      Tavataanko joku päivä porukalla?
